Layering a Table for the Holidays

I love a cozy table!  It’s fun to set a fancy table for guests once in a while.  Because lets face it, (in my house) the table is rarely set for this many people, and if it is it’s for a cookout or pizza on paper plates. 🙂  Hosting a big holiday happens for me once or maybe twice a year.  Thanksgiving and sometimes Easter.  I really enjoy decorating the table for a holiday…especially Thanksgiving!

When preparing a table the most important thing is layering.  I’m going to give you a few tips for setting the table for a special gathering!

This is my table in all its glory and how it usually looks.  For Thanksgiving I have a great tablecloth that I received as a wedding present.  The first nine years we were married I didn’t have a table big enough to use it on.  A few years ago Lucas built me this one and I love it!

First, Layer it up with a tablecloth.  This toile one is perfect for fall!

Second, if you have chargers for your plates add those next.  If not start with your plates.  (I use neutral plates because they go with everything and you can accent with other decorations and colors for specific holidays).

Next, gather some fillers you want for your table.  I am using a silver platter for the turkey in the center, some silver gravy boats and white pumpkins along with white napkins and my favorite napkin rings!  Don’t be afraid to mix and match!

I wanted to add some greenery and the only thing still alive outside right now (besides evergreen) is rosemary.  I cut one sprig to tuck into each napkin ring.  A simple trick to add a little pretty and another layer to your table!

Lastly,  arrange the silverware and the glassware…and you have a layered table.  You don’t have to buy a bunch of fancy stuff to arrange a nice table, use what you have, borrow from nature and then evaluate what you need.  This gravy boat, half of the glasses and Transferware bowls are all from the thrift store!

Hope these tips help you the next time you have family and friends over for a holiday.  Tablescapes are fun and remember layering is the key.  And don’t forget to have fun in the process.  People like when you take the time to make them feel special and setting a cozy table is an easy way to do that!
